I was reading a fanfic in the Friendship is Optimal universe, and I noted the word ¨digitalism¨.

It was used to denote the view held by some humans, that digital beings (in this case, the digital lives under CeletAI´s reign, mostly ponies, but also some griffins, donkeys, dragons, and others.) are inherently inferior than humans.

I thought it was a great unintended pun: the word ¨digit¨ also means fingers, so in a way, digitalism might be interpreted as ¨the view that those who have fingers (Homo sapiens) are superior than those without¨.

And this brings me back to my analysis on the humans´ use of symbolism of the hoof as a subtle expression of their belief in ponies´ inferiority.

digital adv.
first used in the 1650s, "pertaining to fingers", from Latin digitalis, from digitus.
Meaning "using numerical digits" is from 1938, especially of computers after c.1945.

digit n.
first used in late 14th century, "numeral below 10", (numerals under 10 were counted on fingers. The "finger or toe" sense in English is used since 1640s.)
from Latin
digitus "finger or toe", related to dicere "tell, say, point out".
F
rom PIE root *deik- "to point out".

Though it doesn't have the pun value, I've seen other science fiction use the term "bio-chauvinism" for the belief in the superiority of biological life. Applies against robots too. A different set of stories had a group called "Humans First" whose logo was a crossed H and 1 conveniently looking somewhat like a swastika. Over in the "Conversion Bureau" setting there's the other direction, of ponies being annoyingly pony-supremacist and being backed up by the writers themselves. (After all, they're smarter and longer-lived and objectively morally superior and have sparkly hair...)
